Add an image

Drag in a photo, or right-click a file in Finder and choose Open With, 3D Mate. JPG, PNG, and HEIC all work.

Isolate the subject

The background is removed automatically, so the model is built from the subject you meant, not the room behind it.

Choose an engine

Pick a local AI engine to match the subject and your Mac's memory. Each is a one-time install from inside the app.

Generate locally

Watch the model take shape on your GPU. Pause and resume any time. Queue a whole folder and come back later.

Inspect and refine

Rotate, zoom, and switch materials in a studio-lit viewer. The same rig renders what you export.

The AI engines behind image-to-3D

Most tools give you one model. 3D Mate installs a growing set of local engines, each strong at a different kind of subject. Install only the ones you want.

What makes a good input image?

Single-image AI reconstructs the sides it cannot see by inference. The clearer your subject, the less it has to guess, and the closer the model matches what you had in mind.

  • One subject, fully in frame, filling most of the picture
  • Even, diffuse lighting with soft shadows
  • A plain or simple background
  • A three-quarter angle that shows form, not a flat head-on shot
  • Matte, opaque surfaces the camera can read
Fights the model
  • The subject cut off, tiny, or hidden behind other objects
  • Harsh backlighting or deep shadow that hides shape
  • A busy background that blends into the subject
  • Extreme perspective or a heavy wide-angle lens
  • Glass, chrome, or mirror-like surfaces, and transparency

Local, not cloud

Most image-to-3D tools upload your picture to a server, meter each generation, and need an account. 3D Mate does the opposite.

Generation runs on your Mac's GPU. Your photos and models never leave the machine.

Can AI turn an image into a 3D model?
Yes. 3D Mate's local AI engines infer 3D geometry from an image and build a textured mesh on your Mac. You then inspect it and export GLB, USDZ, OBJ, STL, PLY, or 3MF.
Can I create a 3D model from one image?
Yes. A single, clear image of one subject is enough. Adding a few extra angles of the same object improves the sides the camera could not see.
How do I turn a picture into a 3D model?
Drag the picture into 3D Mate, let it isolate the subject, pick an engine, and generate. When it finishes, inspect the model and export the format you need.
Can I turn an image into an STL?
Yes. Generate a model, then export STL (or 3MF). See the dedicated image to STL page for the fabrication workflow.
Does image-to-3D work offline?
Yes. After a one-time engine install, generation runs entirely on-device with no network. Nothing is uploaded.
Can I generate 3D models locally on Mac?
Yes. 3D Mate is a native macOS app for Apple Silicon (M1 or newer) on macOS 15 or later, and all generation happens on your Mac.
Which image formats work?
Common photo formats such as JPG, PNG, and HEIC. The background is removed automatically.
How much RAM do I need?
It depends on the engine: TripoSR on 8 GB, Stable Fast 3D and TripoSG on 16 GB, and SAM 3D Objects and TRELLIS.2 4B on 24 GB. You install only the engines you choose.
Is a single image enough?
For most subjects, yes. The engines are built for single-image input. Extra angles of the same object help when the back or underside matters.
